How It Is Calculated

Compaction & Layering Tip

For long-lasting driveways, install gravel in two separate compacted lifts: a 3–4 inch sub-base of coarse #2 crushed stone, topped with a 2-inch wearing surface of dense-graded aggregate (#57 or crushed run) with fines for interlocking.

Recommended Driveway Gravel Types

Crusher Run (dense grade aggregate with stone dust), #57 washed limestone, and pea gravel are popular. For drivable surfaces, angular crushed stone locks together firmly under vehicular tires, whereas rounded pea gravel shifts continually.

Truck Delivery Sizing

A single-axle dump truck delivers 5–7 tons, a standard tandem truck handles 10–12 tons, and a heavy tri-axle carries 18–22 tons. Make sure your driveway entrance and overhead utility lines permit heavy truck turnaround.

How to Calculate Gravel for Driveways & Parking Pads

A gravel driveway is an attractive, durable, and cost-effective surface for rural and suburban homes alike. Determining how many tons of gravel you need requires measuring the driveway dimensions, choosing a target compacted depth, and converting the cubic volume into tonnage using the aggregate's density.

1. Measuring the Driveway Dimensions

Measure the total length and width of the driveway in feet (or meters). If the driveway varies in width (such as having a flared entrance or turnaround area), calculate those sections as separate rectangles and add the areas together.

2. Determining Gravel Depth

A new gravel driveway constructed over raw dirt requires a total compacted depth of 6 to 8 inches (typically built with multiple layers). For resurfacing or refreshing an established gravel driveway that already has a firm base, a 2 to 3-inch top dressing is usually sufficient.

Driveway Gravel Calculation Formulas (Step-by-Step)

Use the following mathematical formulas to calculate gravel requirements manually:

US Customary Formulas (Feet, Inches, Yards, Tons)

1. Driveway Area: Area (sq ft) = Length (ft) × Width (ft)
2. Base Volume (cu yd): Volume = [Area (sq ft) × (Depth (in) ÷ 12)] ÷ 27
3. Order Volume with Waste: Final cu yd = Base Volume × (1 + Waste % ÷ 100)
4. Total Weight (Tons): Weight = Order Volume (cu yd) × Density (tons/cu yd)
5. Truckloads Required: Trucks = Round Up (Total Weight ÷ Truck Payload)

Metric Formulas (Meters, Millimeters, Tonnes)

1. Driveway Area: Area (m²) = Length (m) × Width (m)
2. Base Volume (cu meters): Volume (m³) = Area (m²) × [Depth (mm) ÷ 1,000]
3. Order Volume with Waste: Final m³ = Base Volume × (1 + Waste % ÷ 100)
4. Total Weight (Tonnes): Weight = Order Volume (m³) × Density (tonnes/m³)
5. Truckloads Required: Trucks = Round Up (Total Weight ÷ Truck Payload)

3. Account for Subgrade Compaction

When gravel is spread and compacted under heavy vehicle weight, loose stone particles interlock, reducing the visible volume. Furthermore, loose aggregate naturally sinks into the softer dirt subgrade below. Adding a 10% to 15% allowance ensures you achieve your specified compacted thickness.

4. Estimating Material Delivery Costs

Quarries sell aggregate by the short ton (2,000 lbs in the US) or metric tonne (1,000 kg). Multiplying the estimated tonnage by your supplier's price per ton provides the raw material cost. Be sure to ask your quarry whether delivery freight and fuel surcharges are charged per load or per ton.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many tons of gravel are in a cubic yard?

A typical cubic yard of crushed stone or driveway gravel weighs approximately 1.4 short tons (2,800 lbs), or 1.68 tonnes per cubic meter.

How deep should a gravel driveway be?

A newly built gravel driveway requires a minimum depth of 6 to 8 inches of compacted stone. For an existing driveway maintenance refresh, 2 to 3 inches is standard.

How much area does 1 ton of gravel cover?

At a 4-inch depth, 1 short ton of gravel covers approximately 55 to 60 square feet. At a 2-inch depth, 1 ton covers roughly 110 to 120 square feet.

Can I calculate driveway gravel using metric units?

Yes. Select "Metric" in the dropdown above to enter your driveway dimensions in meters and millimeters. Results will display in cubic meters and metric tonnes.

What is the best gravel for a driveway surface?

Crusher run (also known as ABC stone or dense grade aggregate) or #57 crushed limestone are ideal because their angular shapes lock together to prevent tire spinning and rutting.
