Driveway Paving Calculator
Estimate driveway paving area, paver quantities, base and bedding volumes, plus your paver and labor budget in one place.
Project Measurements
Choose your unit system and enter driveway dimensions.
Materials & Costs
Enter paver dimensions, base layers and unit prices.
Planning estimate only. Actual quantities depend on paver pattern, joint spacing, cuts, site preparation and supplier specifications.
Your Estimate
Calculate to display your driveway quantities and budget.
Cost Breakdown & Formula
A 5–10% waste allowance is common for simple layouts; diagonal or curved patterns may need more. Base depth should reflect soil conditions, drainage and traffic — confirm local specs before ordering.
What This Driveway Calculator Estimates
Surface area, paver quantity (with waste allowance), geometric compacted base and bedding volumes, plus an itemized paver and labor budget. Supports both US customary and metric units.
Before You Order Materials
Verify paver dimensions, joint width, pack coverage, color batch and delivery minimums with your supplier. Confirm base depth and drainage with your contractor — this tool is a planning guide, not an engineering spec.
How to Plan a Driveway Paving Project
A driveway is one of the largest paved surfaces on a residential property. Careful measurement and realistic material planning help avoid under-ordering, mid-project delays and budget overruns. This calculator brings area, paver count, base volume, bedding volume and cost into a single view so you can compare supplier quotes and plan the build.
1. Measure the Driveway Accurately
For straight driveways, multiply length × width. If the driveway widens toward the street or has an irregular outline, break it into rectangles or trapezoids, calculate each section and add the areas. Use the average width for tapered driveways. Accurate measurement is the foundation of a reliable estimate.
2. Choose Paver Size and Allowance
Paver dimensions determine how many units are needed. A small allowance for cuts and waste is always recommended — a simple layout often uses 5–10%, while complex patterns may need more. Keep a few spare pavers after installation for future repairs.
3. Plan Base and Bedding Layers
Driveways require a stable, well-compacted aggregate base and a thin bedding layer of sand. Depths depend on soil type, climate, drainage and expected vehicle loads. A contractor can recommend the appropriate specification for your site — the calculator uses your entered depths to estimate volume only.
4. Estimate Pavers and Costs
Paver quantity is calculated from the order area and the face area of a single paver, rounded up to whole units. Paver and labor costs are multiplied by the entered per-area-unit rates. Excavation, base aggregate, bedding sand, edging, drainage, delivery and taxes are excluded unless you factor them into your own rates.
5. Verify Before Ordering
Confirm manufacturer coverage, joint width, pack sizes and delivery requirements with your supplier. For large projects, consider ordering all pavers from the same production batch to maintain consistent color across the finished driveway.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many pavers do I need for my driveway?
The quantity depends on driveway area, paver face dimensions and your waste allowance. The calculator rounds the estimated quantity up to whole pavers.
Is a 6-inch base suitable for every driveway?
No. Required base depth depends on soil, drainage, climate, vehicle loads and local codes. Follow recommendations from a qualified paving professional.
Does the calculator account for joint spacing?
No. It uses entered paver face dimensions. Actual joint width, pattern and cuts will affect the final quantity — verify with your installer or supplier.
Are base and bedding volumes ready to order?
They are geometric volumes from your entered depths. Actual purchase quantities differ due to compaction, material type, grading and bulking — apply supplier-specific allowances.
Can I use metric measurements?
Yes. Select Metric to enter driveway length in meters, paver sizes in millimeters, and depths in millimeters. Area is shown in m² and volume in m³.
Does the total include every installation expense?
No. The subtotal includes only pavers and labor from your entered rates. Excavation, base aggregate, bedding sand, edging, drainage, delivery, equipment and taxes are not included.
