Asphalt Cost Calculator
Estimate your asphalt paving budget using project dimensions, compacted thickness, material price, labor and additional costs.
Project Measurements
Choose your unit system and enter paved dimensions.
Prices & Additional Costs
Enter local material, labor and one-off costs.
Planning estimate only. Actual costs depend on mix specifications, site conditions, local pricing and contractor quotes.

Cost Breakdown & Formula
Replace example prices with current quotes from your local supplier and contractor. Add delivery, preparation, excavation, edging, drainage or disposal to the "Other Costs" field — and avoid counting the same expense twice.
What This Asphalt Cost Calculator Estimates
Paved area, asphalt tonnage based on density, material cost from your price per ton, labor cost from your per-square-foot rate, plus a total that includes your one-off "Other Costs" entry.
Before You Commit
Confirm material price, minimum-load charges, taxes, delivery and site preparation costs with your contractor. Compare at least two local quotes — this tool is a planning guide, not a binding estimate.
How to Estimate Asphalt Paving Cost
An asphalt paving budget has three main parts: material (asphalt mix by weight), installation labor (priced per area), and one-off or project-specific charges. This calculator separates them so you can see which input affects the total the most and adjust your assumptions before requesting quotes.
1. Measure the Paved Area
Multiply the paved length by width. For irregular shapes, split the surface into rectangles and add the sections. Accurate measurements are the foundation of a reliable material estimate.
2. Convert Volume into Tonnage
Asphalt is delivered by weight, so the thickness and density matter. Multiply area by compacted depth (in feet) to get volume, then multiply by density (lb/cu ft) and divide by 2,000 to convert pounds to US short tons.
3. Apply the Right Material Price
Asphalt mix prices vary by region, mix design and seasonal demand. Enter the price per US short ton quoted by your supplier — not per metric tonne. Confirm whether the quote already includes delivery or fuel surcharges.
4. Add Labor and Installation
Labor rates for asphalt paving vary widely by site access, base preparation, compaction requirements and region. Enter a rate per square foot from your contractor or a local estimate.
5. Include One-Off Costs
Delivery, excavation, removal of existing pavement, edging, drainage, permits and disposal fees can add meaningfully to the total. Enter them as a single "Other Costs" figure — but only if they are not already inside your labor rate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are the default prices current market prices?
No. The default values are examples for calculation purposes only. Enter actual local supplier and contractor quotes for a useful budget.
Does the estimate include excavation?
Excavation is included only if you account for it in the labor rate or the "Other Costs" field. Check your contractor's quote to avoid omissions or duplicate charges.
Does the calculator include a waste allowance?
No separate waste allowance is included. If your contractor recommends extra material, add the adjusted quantity or cost rather than assuming it is already covered.
Can I use metric measurements?
Yes. Select Metric to enter length and width in meters, depth in millimeters and density in kg/m³. Area shows in m², tonnage in metric tonnes, and prices are entered per metric tonne and per m².
Why is my contractor's quote different?
Quotes may include minimum-load charges, equipment, site preparation, transport, compaction, taxes, drainage, removal of existing pavement and other work not represented by the entered rates.
