How It Is Calculated

Ordering Tip

A simple layout often starts around 5–10% extra. Herringbone, diagonal and curved layouts may need more. Confirm the manufacturer's pack coverage and joint recommendations with your supplier.

What This Block Calculator Estimates

Surface area (rectangle, circle or known total), area with waste allowance, approximate block quantity based on block face dimensions, and the number of complete packs required from your supplier's stated coverage.

Before You Order Blocks

Confirm block dimensions, joint width, laying pattern, pack coverage and delivery minimums with your supplier. Complex patterns and curved edges need more cutting than simple layouts — this is a planning estimate, not a cutting layout.

How to Plan a Block Paving Project

Block paving is a popular choice for driveways, patios and garden paths. Careful measuring and a sensible waste allowance help you order the right quantity, avoid mid-project delays and reduce waste. This calculator brings area, block count and full-pack estimate into one view.

1. Measure the Paved Area

For rectangles, multiply length × width. For circles, use pi × radius squared. For irregular shapes, split the site into rectangles and circles, calculate each, and add the results. If you already know the total area, enter it directly using the "I Already Know the Area" option.

2. Enter Block Face Dimensions

The block face — length × width — determines how many units cover one square unit of surface. Block thickness does not affect the coverage count. Enter your block dimensions in inches (US) or millimeters (metric).

3. Choose a Waste Allowance

Cuts at edges, corners and around drains plus occasional breakage mean you should order slightly more than the exact area. A 5–10% allowance is common for simple layouts; complex patterns, herringbone and curved edges may need more. Always check with your installer.

4. Enter Pack Coverage

Blocks are often sold in packs that cover a stated area. Use the manufacturer's coverage figure in the same unit as your area (sq ft or m²). The calculator divides the area-with-waste by pack coverage and rounds up to the next full pack.

5. Prepare the Base Separately

This calculator estimates surface blocks and packs only. Excavation, sub-base aggregate, bedding sand, jointing sand, edge restraints, drainage and labor need separate calculations. Confirm the base specification with your installer or local building guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much extra block paving should I order?

The allowance depends on layout, cutting requirements, pattern and breakage risk. Use the adjustable waste slider as a starting point, then confirm the final quantity with your installer or supplier.

How are paving packs calculated?

The calculator divides the area including waste by the coverage per pack you enter, then rounds up to a whole pack.

Does this calculator include sand and sub-base?

No. It estimates paving blocks and packs only. Bedding material, jointing sand, sub-base, excavation and labour need separate calculations.

Can I switch between US customary and metric units?

Yes. When you change units, the calculator converts the current numeric entries to the other measurement system. Always check the displayed dimensions and pack coverage before calculating.

Does it handle circular patios or known total areas?

Yes. Choose "Circle" to enter a radius, or "I Already Know the Area" to enter the total surface area directly. Both options work in US and metric units.
