How It Is Calculated

Pro Tip

Always buy full packs. Compare the calculated coverage with the manufacturer's stated pack coverage, especially for multi-size or patterned pavers.

Why Cutting Allowance Matters

Edge cuts, pattern matching and breakage typically require 5–15% extra material. Complex patterns or irregular shapes may need higher allowances.

Pack vs. Piece Ordering

Most suppliers sell pavers in full packs only. This calculator rounds up so you never under-order and end up short on the last day of installation.

How to Calculate Patio Pavers Accurately

A good patio estimate starts with accurate measurements and realistic waste allowances. This calculator uses a simple area-based method that works well for rectangular and near-rectangular patios.

1. Measure the Patio Footprint

Measure the length and width of the finished paved area. For L-shaped or irregular patios, break the shape into rectangles, calculate each area, and add them together.

2. Know Your Exact Paver Size

Use the actual face dimensions of one paver. Do not rely on nominal sizes if the product has significant bevels or spacers.

Calculation Formulas

1. Patio Area = Length × Width
2. Adjusted Area = Patio Area × (1 + Cutting Allowance % ÷ 100)
3. Coverage per Paver = (Paver Length × Paver Width) ÷ 144 (US) or ÷ 1,000,000 (Metric)
4. Pavers Needed = Ceiling(Adjusted Area ÷ Coverage per Paver)
5. Full Packs = Ceiling(Pavers Needed ÷ Pieces per Pack)
6. Material Cost = Adjusted Area × Price per unit area

3. Worked Example (US)

A 20 ft × 15 ft patio = 300 sq ft. With 10% allowance → 330 sq ft. Using 12×12 inch pavers (1 sq ft each) → 330 pavers. At 10 pieces per pack → 33 full packs. At $5.50/sq ft the material budget is $1,815.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this calculator design a laying pattern?

No. It estimates quantities by area. Complex patterns, borders and cuts still need a detailed layout or installer takeoff.

What if my patio is not rectangular?

Divide it into smaller rectangles or triangles, calculate each area separately, then add them together. Subtract any unpaved zones.

Why do I need a cutting allowance?

Extra material covers edge cuts, breakage, fitting adjustments and the occasional damaged piece. 8–12% is typical for most residential patios.

Does the cost include labor or base materials?

No. The cost shown is only for the paver material itself based on the price you enter. Labor, base aggregate, sand, edging and delivery are extra.

Can I switch between US and Metric units?

Yes. Select "Metric" from the dropdown to enter dimensions in meters and millimeters. Results will be shown in square meters (m²).
